1. Post Secondary? Philosophy and then joined the Army. Kant didn't seem to impress the drill Sergeant.
2. Marital Status? Soon to be wed (May '04) with a young 'un on the way!!! Yippee!!
3. Where do you live? Edmonton, or wherever the army says I must hang my hat.
4. What do you do? I'm a soldier, formerly an infantryman, now an electronics technician, which is such an inadequate description that it makes me shake my head.
5. Highlights? Heh... Here are a few of the many:
How about this: out of I don't know how many troops, I was picked as the entire army's "most deserving" junior non-commissioned officer this last year, flown to Ottawa with my girlfriend for a week, and given the duty of standing sentry on the National Cenotaph for Remembrance Day.
Or how about this: my section of 10 troops discovered a "lost" town in the mountains of Bosnia when we almost ran over an old fellow on our patrol route. He asked us to shoot him. He'd given up on life. So after some questioning, it seems like there was a hamlet not too distant that hadn't seen a new face for years, and all the people were destitute, ridden with diseases, and malnourished. We went back to camp and passed the word, and the next day, we rolled back up there with our armoured fighting vehicle loaded to the guns with hams, chickens, canned goods, clothing, blankets, boots and shoes for the children, and more of the same. God, you should have seen those people when we rolled up and laid it all out on the table we brought. I still get choked up thinking about it.
Or how about this: sent to the top of a mountain in Croatia, honeycombed with dank, echoing, dark tunnels hacked out by nazis with slave labour and then by Tito, again with slave labour, I brought out my saxophone and played in the dimness. I swear I could feel the ghosts which walked those endless shafts, the tones lingering and fading over minutes, not seconds. My hair stood on end, but I played anyway, and hypersensitive to even the tiniest sound, I drank the rich fear and pride of this rare moment.
Wow. I didn't mean to get so carried away. But my life is so filled with highlights that it's almost not fair (don't worry, I'm touching wood.) I've had times which were hysterical, and happily, I've been able to pass the belly laughs on to others. I have so much richness in my life, (family, friends, health, challenge, perspective, lucidity, etc.) that I often feel quite guilty that many others haven't been given even half as much. I'm just glad I understand that, and I don't take it for granted. _________________ --

Hello LPSS Alumni!
Ken Reeves, Grad from January 1986 here.
I just discovered the alumni group of LPSS. After surfing around the site for the better part of an hour, seeing all your names, I was surprised how many memories started to come back.
One resounding feeling surfaced… It doesn’t feel like twenty years ago to me.
After LPSS, I attended DeVry in TO and then in Phoenix, AZ. I graduated from there in 1988 with a BSc in Electronics Engineering Technology. I worked for 7 years with a test equipment distribution company as a technical sales representative first in Mississauga then in 1993 moving to Edmonton, AB. In 1995 I changed jobs to work for a manufacturer called Fluke Electronics and I have been with them since. Presently I manage distribution sales channels and deal directly with end user customer whenever possible. I am still in Edmonton.
With my wife of almost eleven years we have been raising three children… a 9 year old girl, 6 year old boy and a 4 year old girl. Between parenting, work, house renovations/repairs I also find time to volunteer on our community executive. I manage the sports programs which would include soccer and the utilization of our new outdoor community rink.
I have been “home” to Mississauga several times over the past 12 years and every time I go back I’m amazed at the changes around Mississauga. The area around LPSS doesn’t seem much different (except for some new houses) but the areas off of the Lakeshore at Southdown and towards the west side of Port Credit have changed the most.
In retrospect I’m sure we have all changed a lot since graduation. _________________ I have been in Edmonton since 1993 working and raising a family of three. |
